Concrete Work in Apalachin
Apalachin is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Owego, on the south side of the Susquehanna River west of Binghamton, and most concrete contractors' calls here come from homeowners with suburban lots and a two-car driveway. The 2020 census counted 2,632 residents and 1,120 housing units, with only 4.5 percent vacant and a homeowner vacancy rate of 1.6 percent. We pour and replace driveways, patios, stamped concrete, walks and steps, and garage or shed slabs.
A hamlet named for its creek
Apalachin takes its name from Apalachin Creek. The first settler arrived around 1786, but the community was not founded until 1836. It sits at about 843 feet, next to Interstate 86 and NY 17, in the southeastern part of the Town of Owego in Tioga County. Riverside Cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.
Most people outside the area know the name from November 14, 1957, when a meeting of Mafia leaders at a home here was broken up after a visit from a New York State trooper. Locals know it better for the Apalachin Firemen's Field Days, a June carnival that ran from 1960 until 2016.
Suburban lots on river ground
Apalachin's housing is mostly single-family homes, many with attached garages, front walks and backyard patios. Lots near the river and the creek sit on lower ground, while streets farther south climb toward the hills.
On the lower streets, water is the main enemy. A driveway or patio on a thin base over damp soil tends to settle, crack and hold puddles. We excavate below the frost-prone topsoil, compact a thick crushed stone base and set the finished slab with a pitch that carries water to the street or the yard. Farther up the hill, the challenge shifts to runoff speed and driveway slope, so we plan joints, finish texture and drainage at the bottom of the drive.
Popular projects in Apalachin
Driveway replacement and widening. Many original driveways are now cracked at the apron and settled near the garage. We remove, rebuild the base and pour a new driveway, often widened for a third car or a trailer pad.
Backyard patios. Stamped concrete in a slate, flagstone or ashlar pattern is popular for patios that connect to a deck or back door. A plain broom finish with a smooth border is a lower-upkeep option.
Front steps and walks. Replacing settled or cracked steps with new ones on proper footings, and widening the walk to the driveway.
Garage and shed slabs. New floors in detached garages, and pads for sheds or hot tubs.
Town and county rules
Apalachin is part of the Town of Owego, so code and permit questions go to the town. We check what your project needs, and whether any floodplain rules apply on lots near the river, before we schedule the pour.
Hot tub and shed pads
Backyard projects in Apalachin often include a pad for a hot tub or a shed. A hot tub full of water is heavy, so the pad needs a solid base, enough thickness and a level surface. A shed pad should be sized a little larger than the building so water drips onto concrete or stone rather than soil. We plan both around access, drainage and any electrical runs.
