Concrete Across the Town of Fenton

Fenton covers about 33 square miles northeast of Binghamton, from the Chenango River on its west line to the Chenango County border on its north, and had 6,441 residents at the 2020 census. Homeowners who call concrete contractors here range from Hillcrest residents with suburban lots near the river to owners of rural properties around Port Crane and North Fenton. We pour and replace driveways, patios, stamped concrete, walks and steps, and garage, barn and shed slabs.

Canal days and Port Crane

The area was first settled around 1788. The town was formed from the town of Chenango in 1855 and is named for Reuben Fenton, a governor of New York. The Chenango Canal, which operated from 1834 to 1876, ran along the town's west side, and the hamlet of Port Crane grew up as a canal port named for engineer Jason Crane. When railroads replaced the canal, the trains bypassed the town and Port Crane's prosperity faded.

Other hamlets include North Fenton, Pleasant Hill, Quinneville and Wyman Corner, and Hillcrest is a suburban residential community east of the river. Interstate 88 crosses the southern part of town.

Glacial ground

Chenango Valley State Park, next to the Chenango River, is known for its wooded golf course and glacial landscape, with Chenango Lake used for swimming and boating and Lily Lake known for fishing. The same glacial history shapes the soil under Fenton homes.

Broome County's soil conservation district describes valley soils like Chenango and Howard as gravelly outwash on plains and terraces, which drains well and makes a good base. Up on the hillsides, till soils such as Volusia and Mardin have a dense fragipan 10 to 26 inches down that holds water. A slab on a hillside lot over that kind of soil needs more crushed stone under it and a clear path for water, or it will heave in late winter.

Rural and suburban projects

Hillcrest and the river side. Suburban lots here typically need driveway replacements, front walks and steps, and backyard patios. Most of these homes are decades old, and original concrete shows settling at the garage, cracked aprons and scaling from salt.

Port Crane and the hills. Larger rural lots often have gravel drives and outbuildings. Common projects are a concrete apron at the road, a pad in front of the garage, a slab for a pole barn or workshop, and walks from the drive to the house. For heavier slabs, we size thickness and reinforcement to the load and confirm the concrete truck can reach the site.

Before we dig

We have utilities marked through UDig NY before any excavation and check with the town on permit needs for structures. Then we build the base, set forms with the right pitch, pour an air-entrained exterior mix, cut joints and give you clear curing and salt timing.

Hard-to-reach pours

Rural Fenton sites can sit well back from the road, up a slope or behind trees. When a concrete truck cannot reach the forms, we plan another way in, whether that is a pump line, a buggy or a temporary path that protects the lawn. We walk the route with you during the estimate so there are no surprises on pour day.

Fenton Questions

Can you pour a slab for a pole barn in Port Crane?

Yes. We size the slab thickness, reinforcement and base for the vehicles or equipment it will carry, and plan truck access ahead of time.

Why does my hillside patio crack and lift?

Many upland soils here hold water above a dense layer close to the surface. Frozen water lifts the slab. A deeper stone base and better drainage cut down on that movement.

Do you cover Hillcrest?

Yes. Hillcrest is part of the town of Fenton, and we work there regularly on driveways, steps, walks and patios.
