Rural Concrete in Colesville

Colesville is a rural town of 4,877 people (2020 census) spread over about 79 square miles east of Binghamton, with the Susquehanna River flowing south through it and Interstate 88 crossing it. Concrete contractors here mostly work on country properties: long driveways, detached garages, barns and farmhouse steps. We pour driveways and aprons, garage, barn and shed slabs, patios and stamped concrete, walks and steps, and we repair or replace failed concrete.

Many hamlets, one town

The area was first settled around 1785, and the town was established in 1821 from part of Windsor. It is named for Nathaniel Cole, who settled at Cole's Hill in 1795. Harpursville, named for early developer Robert Harpur, is the principal community. Other hamlets include Belden, Center Village, Doraville, New Ohio, Nineveh, North Colesville, Ouaquaga, Sanitaria Springs (once called Osborne Hollow), Tunnel and West Colesville. NY Routes 7, 79 and 235 are the main roads, and the northern town line borders Chenango County.

With roughly 2,189 housing units counted in 2000 across almost 80 square miles, homes are spread out. Each property tends to have its own mix of needs, from a short apron to a full garage floor.

Valley ground and hill ground

Along the Susquehanna and the main valleys, Broome County's soil descriptions list gravelly outwash soils such as Chenango and Howard on terraces, along with floodplain soils like Tioga, Middlebury and Wayland closer to the river. The county notes Wayland soils are poorly drained and flood annually. On the hillsides, till soils with a dense fragipan hold water a foot or two below the surface.

Each of those changes how we build. On gravelly terraces, a well-compacted base drains nicely. Near the river, we plan for a high water table and check whether floodplain rules apply before any filling or paving. On hill soils, we add depth to the stone base and make sure water can get away from the slab edges, which cuts down on frost heave.

Country projects we pour

  • Garage and pole-barn floors: thickness and reinforcement matched to trucks, tractors and equipment
  • Driveway aprons: concrete where the gravel drive meets the road, where washouts and ruts begin
  • Full driveways: for owners who want to replace gravel near the house
  • Farmhouse steps and walks: new stoops on proper footings, with even risers
  • Patios: broom-finish or stamped slabs behind the house
  • Shed and equipment pads: level bases that keep wood and metal off the ground

Planning for distance

Rural jobs take more planning. We confirm the concrete truck can reach the pour site, protect gravel drives and lawns along the way and schedule pours for days when the weather gives the slab a fair chance to cure. We also have utility lines marked through UDig NY, even on rural lots, before excavation starts.

Around the town

Harpursville United Methodist Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, and Nathaniel Cole Park Pond is near West Colesville. The town adopted its own seal in 2021.

Steps and walks for older farmhouses

Older farmhouses in Colesville frequently have stone or concrete steps that were added or patched over many years. When we replace them, we set new footings, keep the risers even, and finish the treads with a texture that holds up to mud, snow and work boots. We can also extend a walk to a side door or mudroom entry so the path people actually use is the solid one.

Colesville Questions

Can you pour a concrete apron without paving my whole gravel drive?

Yes. An apron at the road or garage door handles the hardest wear, and the rest of the drive can stay gravel.

Do you travel out to Nineveh and North Colesville?

Yes. We cover the whole town and plan truck access for rural properties before the pour day.

My barn is near the river. Anything special?

We check whether floodplain rules apply to your lot, plan for a high water table and build a deeper, compacted base so the slab stays level.
