Concrete in the Newark Valley

Newark Valley is a town of 3,660 people (2020 census) covering about 50 square miles in the northeast corner of Tioga County, right on the Broome County line northwest of Binghamton. Concrete contractors here work on a small village along NY Route 38 and a lot of farm and rural property in the Owego Creek valleys. We pour driveways and aprons, garage, barn and shed slabs, patios and stamped concrete, walks and steps, and we repair or replace failed concrete.

Three names in 40 years

The area was settled around 1791 as Brown's Settlement in the Town of Berkshire. It was incorporated as Westville in 1823, renamed Newark in 1824 at a New Jersey settler's suggestion, and renamed Newark Valley in 1862 to avoid confusion with Newark in Wayne County. Early settlers included Asa Bement in 1791 and Revolutionary War veteran Richard Sarles, whose homestead area became known as Searlestown.

Twelve properties in the town are on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Bement-Billings House, Blewer Farm and West Newark School House. The Bement-Billings Farmstead is a 95-acre living history site run by the Newark Valley Historical Society.

Two creek valleys

The East Branch of Owego Creek flows south through the western part of town, and the West Branch forms the western boundary. The village sits in the west-central part of the town on NY 38, and NY 38 and 38B meet south of it. Homes along the creek valleys sit on lower, flatter ground, while farms and newer houses climb the hills on either side.

On valley lots, we plan for damp soil and slow drainage, with a thick compacted base and careful pitch. On hillside lots, we deal with runoff, traction on sloped drives and the frost heave that comes from water held in dense upland soils.

Farm and rural slabs

With about 1,615 housing units counted in 2000 across 50 square miles, much of the town is rural. Common projects include:

  • Barn and equipment floors sized for tractors, trucks and livestock equipment
  • Garage slabs for detached garages and workshops
  • Aprons at the road and at garage doors on gravel drives
  • Farmhouse steps and walks on proper footings
  • Patios behind farmhouses and newer homes

We talk through thickness, reinforcement and base depth for each slab based on what it will carry, and we plan how the concrete truck will reach the site.

In the village

Village lots are smaller, with front walks, stoops and short driveways. Trout Ponds park, built in 1869 and bought by the village from New York State for one dollar in the 1950s, and Alexander Park, donated in the early 1960s, are local landmarks. For village homes, we keep new concrete clean and simple and match neighboring walks.

Matching the season to the job

Rural slabs are often scheduled around farm work and the weather. We avoid pouring on frozen or saturated ground, protect fresh concrete when nights turn cold, and plan larger barn or garage slabs for stretches when the forecast gives the concrete time to cure. If a cold snap or a heavy rain is coming, we tell you and move the date rather than rush the pour. Smaller jobs such as steps and walks are easier to fit in between, and we can often handle them on shorter notice.

Newark Valley Questions

Can you pour a barn floor for livestock equipment?

Yes. We size the slab and reinforcement for the equipment and plan drainage and finish texture for how the floor will be used.

Do you work in Tioga County?

Yes. Newark Valley, Owego and Apalachin are all part of our service area.

My sloped gravel drive washes out at the road. What helps?

A concrete apron at the road end stops ruts and washouts, and we can grade it so water is directed to the ditch.
