Concrete on the Hills South of the City
The Town of Binghamton is a separate town from the city, wrapping around the city's south side and running to the Pennsylvania border, and concrete contractors working here are mostly dealing with hills. The town sits at about 1,621 feet, far above the river valley downtown, covers about 25 square miles and had 4,623 residents at the 2020 census. We pour and replace driveways, patios, stamped concrete, walks and steps, and garage or shed slabs on hillside and rural lots.
Park Terrace to Hawleyton
Wikipedia names four communities in the town. Park Terrace is a suburban neighborhood right next to the southern part of the city. Summit Hill is a hamlet south of Park Terrace on County Road 117. Orchard Park is a residential area on the north end of Felters Road that was once a large apple orchard. Hawleyton, in the south on County Road 117, was the only other 19th-century settlement in the town besides the old village of Binghamton, and the Old Hawleyton Methodist Episcopal Church was listed on the National Register in 2006.
Park Terrace and Orchard Park bring suburban jobs such as driveway replacements, front steps and backyard patios. Hawleyton and the southern roads are more rural, with long driveways, garages and outbuildings that need slabs.
Slope, runoff and hill soils
The biggest factor here is grade. A driveway that climbs from the road to the garage carries water and meltwater straight down its length, and in winter it needs traction. We set joints and pitch to break up the flow, use a coarser broom finish on steeper sections and plan where the water goes at the bottom so it does not wash out the shoulder or flow into the garage.
Soil matters too. Broome County's soil conservation district describes many upland till soils, including Volusia and Mardin, as having a dense fragipan between about 10 and 26 inches below the surface. Water perches above that layer after rain and snowmelt. When it freezes, it can lift a slab. We dig deeper, add more crushed stone under slabs on these soils and give water a way out at the edges.
A town shaped by the city
The town was formed in 1855 from part of the Town of Chenango. The village of Binghamton had been incorporated in 1834, and when the city of Binghamton was formed in 1867 it took the town's northern part and its river frontage. Bayless Creek flows north from the town into the Susquehanna. The 2000 census counted 1,911 housing units, most of them single-family homes on larger lots than you find in the city.

Town of Binghamton Questions
Is the Town of Binghamton the same as the city?
No. The town is a separate municipality south of the city, with its own offices and rules. We check the town's requirements for your project.
How do you keep a steep driveway from being slippery?
We use a coarser broom finish on steep sections, set pitch so water does not sheet across the surface and plan drainage at the bottom so ice has less chance to form.
My Park Terrace patio heaves every spring. Can that be fixed?
Usually. Heaving comes from water trapped above dense soil freezing under the slab. A deeper crushed stone base and better drainage reduce the movement.
