Concrete for Historic Owego

Owego is the Tioga County village where Owego Creek meets the Susquehanna, and concrete contractors working here split their time between historic homes downtown and newer houses in the surrounding town. The village had 3,654 residents in 2020, and the Town of Owego around it had 18,728. We replace and repair sidewalks, steps, driveways and patios, and pour new garage and shed slabs in both.

An old chartered village

Owego was incorporated on April 4, 1827, and it is one of only twelve New York villages still incorporated under a charter. The name comes from the Iroquois word "ahwaga," meaning "where the valley widens." On September 27, 1849, the Great Fire of Owego started in the Temperance Hall of the Ely building and destroyed 104 buildings in the business district, which was then rebuilt.

The Owego Central Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places, along with the Tioga County Courthouse, the U.S. Post Office, St. Paul's Church and Evergreen Cemetery. On these streets, concrete is part of the historic setting. Front walks, carriage steps and stoops should look right next to brick, stone and slate, so we talk through finish, color and joint layout before we form anything.

Flood heights here

The National Weather Service gauge at Owego has a flood stage of 30 feet. Its record crest came on September 8, 2011, at 39.62 feet, from the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee, and the June 2006 flood reached 35.9 feet. Wikipedia notes that the town was badly damaged by the 2011 flood when the Susquehanna overflowed its banks.

After floods like those, slabs near the river often lose part of their base. A patio or driveway that has cracked along a line, sunk in one corner or started to sound hollow usually has a void underneath. We open the area, find out how far the damage goes, rebuild with compacted crushed stone and pour new concrete pitched to drain.

The town beyond the village

The Susquehanna divides the Town of Owego in two. NY 17, the Southern Tier Expressway, runs along the south bank and NY 17C along the north. Hamlets include Apalachin, Campville, Flemingville, Gaskill Corners and South Owego, and the town reaches the Pennsylvania border to the south. Homes outside the village are more often on larger lots with longer driveways, garages and outbuildings, so slabs, aprons and patio projects are more common there.

How we work in Owego

  • Visit and written estimate: measurements, drainage review, finish choices
  • Utility locate: UDig NY marks lines before we dig
  • Base: remove soft soil, compact crushed stone
  • Pour: air-entrained exterior concrete, broom or stamped finish, cut joints
  • Cure: clear guidance on traffic and de-icing salt

We also check with the village or town on permit needs, and on any historic district review that may apply downtown.

Living with a historic house

Owners of older Owego homes often want to keep pieces of what is already there, such as a stone curb, an old carriage step or a brick edge. We can pour new concrete around those features instead of removing them, and set the new surface so water runs away from both the house and the original stonework.

Owego Questions

Can new concrete steps look right on an old Owego house?

Yes. We match finish and proportions to the house, and a plain, well-finished step often suits historic homes better than a heavy pattern. We also check whether downtown historic district review applies.

My driveway cracked after the 2011 flood. Should I patch it?

Patching rarely lasts if the base washed out. We check for voids, and if the base is gone, we recommend removing and rebuilding it before pouring new concrete.

Do you work in Campville, Flemingville and South Owego?

Yes. We cover the whole Town of Owego, including Apalachin and the hamlets on both sides of the river.
