Concrete Work in Whitney Point

Whitney Point is a village of 960 people (2020 census) on about 1.1 square miles at the junction of the Tioughnioga and Otselic rivers, and concrete contractors who work here need to respect both the rivers and the age of the village. Whitney Point has been here since the Whitney family arrived around 1800. We replace and repair driveways, walks, steps and patios, and pour garage and shed slabs, with careful attention to drainage on low ground.

Fire, flood and the dam

The village was incorporated in 1871 as Whitney's Point, named for developers Thomas and William Whitney. A catastrophic fire in 1897 nearly destroyed it. Serious floods in 1935 and 1936 led to work on a flood-control dam on the Otselic River north of the village, completed in 1942. Later, year-round water was held back for recreation, creating Whitney Point Lake. The reservoir dam sits in Dorchester Park, and the village slogan is a pun on it.

The dam reduces flood risk, but the village still sits low beside two rivers at about 958 feet. Ground here can stay damp, and slabs that were poured on thin bases often settle or tip over time.

Small lots, old houses

The 2000 census counted 432 housing units in the village, many of them older homes on modest lots. Typical concrete here includes front walks that meet the public sidewalk, stoops of a few steps, narrow driveways to detached garages and small backyard patios. After decades of freeze-thaw and salt, the most common problems are flaking surfaces, sunken walk sections and steps that have pulled away from the house.

For replacements, we remove the old concrete, dig out soft soil and compact crushed stone, then pour an air-entrained mix and pitch the surface toward the street. On steps, we set new footings so the stoop stays attached to the house instead of sinking away from it.

Fair time and busy roads

The Broome County Fair has been held in Whitney Point since 1874, and the village sits at the junction of NY 26, NY 79, NY 206 and U.S. 11, with Interstate 81 along its west side at Exit 8. Homes along the main routes see more traffic, plowing and road salt than side streets, and their driveway aprons take a beating. Replacing the apron with a thicker, well-reinforced section is often the most useful single repair on these lots.

Village history worth keeping

Grace Episcopal Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998, and the Whitney automobile was briefly made in the village around 1902. On older streets, we keep new concrete plain and well finished, match joint spacing with neighboring walks and avoid anything that looks out of place next to the older homes.

Fair-week and busy-season scheduling

Traffic picks up around the village during fair week and on summer weekends near the reservoir. For driveways that open onto the main routes, we try to schedule pours and concrete deliveries outside the busiest days, and we leave the new slab blocked off long enough to cure before cars and trucks use it. If you need the driveway back quickly, we can talk about pouring it in two halves so one side stays open while the other cures.

Whitney Point Questions

Why is my front stoop pulling away from the house?

Steps often sit on shallow footings. As the soil beneath them settles or heaves, the stoop tilts away. New steps on a proper footing stay in place.

Is my driveway apron worth replacing on its own?

On busy roads it often is. The apron takes the most traffic, plowing and salt. A thicker, reinforced apron can extend the life of the rest of the drive.

Do you work outside the village too?

Yes. We cover the surrounding towns of Triangle, Lisle and Barker, along with the rest of the Binghamton area.
