Concrete Work in Lisle

Lisle is a rural town in northern Broome County, about 47 square miles along the Tioughnioga River, with 2,751 residents at the 2010 census. Concrete contractors working here see a small village on the river and many country homes on the hills, with Interstate 81 and U.S. Route 11 running north and south through the valley. We pour driveways and aprons, garage, barn and shed slabs, patios, walks and steps, and repair concrete that has failed.

An old town with a famous first

Lisle was formed from the town of Union in 1801, and in 1831 parts of it were used to create Barker, Nanticoke and Triangle. In 1830 its population was 4,393, then the highest of any town in Broome County. In January 1918, Florence B. Chauncey became the first woman in New York State to vote, at the Lisle Village Hall, and a marker was put up in 2018.

The town has seen hard times from the river too. Wikipedia notes that the flood of 1935 destroyed a large part of the town. Whitney Point Lake lies just east of the town line, and Center Lisle, once called Yorkshire, sits on NY 79.

Valley and hill properties

The village of Lisle is in the eastern part of the town, close to the Tioughnioga. Valley lots there sit on lower ground where good drainage and a solid base keep slabs level. Outside the village, homes and farms spread over the hills with long gravel drives and outbuildings. With only about 1,083 housing units counted in 2000, roughly 23 per square mile, most properties have plenty of room and their own mix of concrete needs.

On those upland lots, the soil is often glacial till with a dense layer close to the surface that holds water. We excavate deeper, add more crushed stone and slope every slab so water leaves it quickly, which reduces frost heave in late winter.

What Lisle properties usually need

Rural slabs. Pole barns, detached garages and workshops need floors sized to what they hold. We talk through thickness, reinforcement and base depth for trucks, tractors or equipment.

Aprons and pads. Concrete at the road end of a gravel drive, or a pad in front of the garage, stops ruts and washouts where they start.

Steps and walks. Farmhouses and village homes often have old stoops that have settled. New steps on proper footings, with even risers and a broom finish, are safer in winter.

Patios. A broom-finish or stamped patio behind the house, pitched away from the foundation.

Planning a rural pour

We confirm truck access, protect drives and lawns and schedule around the weather so the slab can cure properly. Every job starts with a UDig NY utility locate, and we check with the town on any permit needs for structures. Exterior slabs get an air-entrained mix and control joints at the right spacing.

Concrete near the Tioughnioga

Village lots near the Tioughnioga sit on the lowest ground in town. For those properties we excavate below soft or silty soil, compact crushed stone in layers and set every slab so water heads to the street or the yard. We also check whether any floodplain rules apply on the lot before adding fill or paving.

Lisle Questions

Do you come out to Lisle for smaller jobs like steps?

Yes. We handle steps, walks and aprons as well as larger slabs, anywhere in the town.

What thickness should my garage slab be?

It depends on the loads. A car garage needs less than a shop that holds a tractor or a loaded truck. We size it once we know how you will use the space.

Why do slabs on my hillside lot crack every few years?

Water trapped above dense soil freezes and lifts the slab. A deeper crushed stone base and better drainage reduce the movement.
