Concrete Work in the Town of Chenango
The Town of Chenango stretches about 34 square miles north of Binghamton, with the Chenango River as its eastern boundary and Interstate 81, U.S. Route 11 and NY Route 12 running through it. It had 10,983 residents at the 2020 census. Concrete contractors here work on suburban streets near the river and on rural properties toward Castle Creek. We pour and replace driveways, patios, stamped concrete, walks and steps, and garage or shed slabs, and we repair concrete that has failed.
An original county town
Chenango was settled around 1787 and established in 1791, before Broome County was formed, making it one of the county's original towns. Wikipedia lists its hamlets as Castle Creek, in the northwest near I-81 Exit 7; Chenango Bridge, in the south by the river; Chenango Forks, in the northeast and shared with Barker; and smaller places including Glen Castle, Hinman's Corners, Kattelville, Newmans Corners, Nimmonsburg and West Chenango.
Housing ranges from postwar subdivisions near the river to farmhouses and newer homes on larger hillside lots. That range means we may pour a two-car driveway on a quarter-acre lot one week and a 40-foot garage slab on a rural property the next.
What the town says about permits
The Town of Chenango's Building Code page states that a building permit is required for all structures, alterations and demolitions, and suggests contacting the Ordinance Office if in doubt. The office has permit requirement sheets for accessory structures and decks, and a Flood Plain Permit form for work near the river.
For a garage, shed or other structure on a new slab, expect a permit. For flatwork such as a patio or driveway, we check with the Ordinance Office before scheduling, especially if the lot is near the Chenango River where the flood plain form may apply.
The Chenango River
The National Weather Service gauge on the Chenango River near Chenango Forks has a flood stage of 10 feet. Its highest crest was 20.3 feet on July 8, 1935; more recent high crests include 14.99 feet in February 1982 and 14.93 feet on September 8, 2011. River lots with low ground need careful grading, a well-compacted base and a slab that sheds water away from the house.
Hillside soils
Broome County's soil conservation district describes many upland soils in the county, such as Volusia and Mardin, as glacial till with a dense fragipan only 10 to 26 inches down. Water moves slowly through that layer, so after rain or snowmelt the ground above it stays wet. On hillside lots we often dig a little deeper, add more crushed stone under the slab and make sure water has a path away from the edges. That reduces frost heave, which is what lifts and cracks slabs in late winter.
Rural and suburban in one town
A Castle Creek farmhouse and a ranch near the river need very different slabs. Out toward West Chenango we often pour garage and barn floors sized for equipment, with an apron where the gravel drive meets the road. Closer to the river hamlets the work is more often a driveway replacement, a front stoop or a stamped patio. Either way, the estimate spells out thickness, reinforcement, base depth and finish before any work starts.

Chenango Questions
Do I need a permit for a garage slab in the Town of Chenango?
The town requires a building permit for all structures, so a garage project needs one. We coordinate the slab with your permit and the town's inspection schedule.
Why does my hillside driveway heave every spring?
Many upland soils here hold water above a dense layer a foot or two down. When that water freezes, it lifts the slab. A deeper stone base and better drainage reduce the problem.
Do you work in Castle Creek and the northern hamlets?
Yes. We work across the whole town, from the river hamlets to Castle Creek and West Chenango.
