Concrete Work in Greene

Greene sits in the southwestern corner of Chenango County, northeast of Binghamton, with the Chenango River flowing south through the town and the village. The town had 5,296 residents at the 2020 census across about 75.6 square miles, and concrete contractors working here split their time between older homes in the village and rural properties around it. We replace and repair walks, steps, driveways and patios, and pour garage, barn and shed slabs.

A canal and river town

The town was formed in 1798 from parts of Bainbridge and Union, was first called Hornby, and was renamed for General Nathanael Greene. The village was incorporated within the town in 1842. The Chenango Canal, opened in 1837 according to the town's Wikipedia page, carried local commerce until the railroad replaced it. Historic buildings still line Genesee Street downtown, and the Chenango River Theatre was founded in 2006.

Homes in the village are older and closer together. Front walks, stoops and narrow drives are the main concrete on these lots, and many have been patched over the years without a proper base underneath.

The Chenango at Greene

The National Weather Service gauge on the Chenango River at Greene has a flood stage of 13 feet. Its highest crest was 22 feet on July 8, 1935. The more recent floods came close: 21.16 feet on June 28, 2006, and 21.09 feet on September 8, 2011.

For properties on low ground near the river, we plan concrete with that history in mind. We remove soft or flood-damaged soil, compact a thick crushed stone base and set every slab to drain away from the house. We also check with the village or town on any floodplain requirements before adding fill or paving near the river.

Village work and country work

In the village: front walks and public sidewalk sections, replacement steps, narrow driveway replacements and small backyard patios. We keep finishes simple and neat to suit older homes and match joint spacing with neighboring walks.

In the town: long driveways with aprons at the road, detached garages and pole barns, farmhouse steps and patios behind newer homes. At about 920 feet in the valley and higher on the hills, rural lots often have wetter till soils that call for a deeper base and good drainage to limit frost heave.

Building for Southern Tier winters

Every exterior slab we pour uses air-entrained concrete, which holds up to freeze-thaw cycles far better than plain concrete. We cut control joints at the right spacing, cure the slab properly and give you specific guidance on when to drive on it and when salt is safe.

Getting started

We visit, measure and give you a written estimate. Before digging, we call UDig NY to have utility lines marked. Then we schedule the work around the weather.

Working with the river village layout

Downtown Greene homes often have driveways shared with or close to the neighbors, and back lots that slope toward the river. We plan where every slab's runoff will go before forming, so new concrete does not send water toward a neighbor's foundation or a basement window well. Where the yard slopes toward the river, a patio may need a low step or a thicker edge on the downhill side so it sits level without a large fill.

Greene Questions

Do you work in Greene even though it is in Chenango County?

Yes. Greene is a short drive from Binghamton, and we cover both the village and the town.

Can you replace just the public sidewalk in front of my village home?

Yes. We replace the failed sections on a rebuilt base so they sit flush with the walks on either side.

My property is close to the river. What should I know?

We check whether floodplain rules apply, plan for a higher water table and build a deeper base so the slab stays level.
